Typing benchmarks are useful when they help you set a realistic goal. They should not be treated as a judgment of intelligence or ability. Different tasks require different levels of speed and accuracy.
Common WPM ranges
- Under 20 WPM: beginner stage; focus on key familiarity.
- 20–35 WPM: developing stage; useful for basic practice.
- 35–50 WPM: practical everyday typing for many users.
- 50–70 WPM: strong speed for school, writing, admin, and office work.
- 70+ WPM: advanced speed, especially when accuracy stays high.
Accuracy changes the meaning of speed
A 60 WPM result with many mistakes may be less useful than 45 WPM with excellent accuracy. Always read WPM and accuracy together.
Use the same test length
Compare one-minute scores with one-minute scores, not with 30-second warmups. Longer tests usually show consistency better than short bursts.
Start with the typing speed test or use a 5 minute typing test for a steadier benchmark.
