These free typing lessons give you a practical path from beginner keyboard control to confident everyday typing. Work through the lessons in order if you are new, or choose the area that needs improvement.
Lesson 1: Home row position
Learn where your fingers rest: left hand on A S D F, right hand on J K L ;, thumbs near the space bar. Practice returning to the home row after each reach. Do not worry about speed yet.
Practice goal: type short home-row patterns with 95%+ accuracy.
Lesson 2: Common home row words
Practise simple words and letter combinations using home row keys. Focus on rhythm and finger control. Example practice: sad lad flask, ask dad fall, salad glass, all ask dad.
Lesson 3: Top row keys
Add Q W E R T and Y U I O P. Keep returning to home row after each reach. Do not let your hands float away from their base position.
Lesson 4: Bottom row keys
Add Z X C V B and N M. Bottom-row keys can feel awkward at first, so practise slowly and keep accuracy high.
Lesson 5: Capital letters
Learn to use Shift without twisting your hands. Use the opposite hand for Shift when possible: left Shift for right-hand letters and right Shift for left-hand letters.
Lesson 6: Punctuation
Practise periods, commas, question marks, apostrophes, quotation marks, colons, and semicolons. Punctuation matters for school assignments, emails, and work documents.
Lesson 7: Number row
Numbers are important for dates, forms, prices, passwords, data entry, and reports. Practise slowly and avoid guessing.
Lesson 8: Real-world typing
Move from drills to school paragraphs, emails, notes, instructions, workplace phrases, and short reports. Use typing practice texts to continue.
Lesson 9: Speed building
Speed comes after accuracy. Practise short bursts, keep breathing steady, read ahead, reduce unnecessary corrections, and retest weekly with the 1 minute typing test.
Lesson 10: Review and personal plan
Identify your weakest area: accuracy, punctuation, numbers, capital letters, rhythm, or endurance. Create a simple weekly plan and keep practising.
Suggested weekly lesson plan
- Week 1: home row, posture, short words, slow accuracy.
- Week 2: top row, bottom row, simple sentences.
- Week 3: capital letters, punctuation, number row.
- Week 4: real-world text, speed building, weekly benchmarks.
