How to Improve Typing Speed

Typing speed improves when your hands know where to go before you consciously think about each key. That comes from repeated, relaxed practice rather than forcing your fingers to move as fast as possible.

Start with accuracy first

Speed built on mistakes is fragile. If you regularly hit the wrong keys, your brain has to spend extra energy correcting errors. Begin each session at a pace where you can stay above 95% accuracy, then increase speed gradually.

Use short daily practice blocks

Five focused minutes every day usually beats one long session once a week. Try this routine:

  • 1 minute: slow warm-up with home-row words.
  • 2 minutes: normal typing test or practice text.
  • 1 minute: repeat words that caused mistakes.
  • 1 minute: relaxed final test.

Build rhythm instead of rushing

Fast typists often look smooth because their spacing is even. Read a few words ahead, keep your shoulders relaxed, and avoid stopping completely after a mistake. Continue, then review the mistake after the test.

Track progress sensibly

Use the same test length when comparing scores. A 1 minute typing test is a good weekly benchmark, while typing practice is better for daily improvement.
